Let’s face it—this world has turned into one big soap opera. You flip on the news and somebody’s yelling, scroll your phone and somebody else is yelling louder, and before you know it your blood pressure’s higher than your trellis after a summer of pole beans.
That’s why I like to skip the drama and head to the garden. No politics out there, no traffic jams, no long-winded coworkers explaining why the copier hates them. Just dirt, plants, and the occasional squirrel giving me the stink eye. And you know what? That’s enough therapy for me.
When you’ve got your hands in the soil, you don’t need a couch or a prescription. You need a good pair of gloves (or not, if you like your fingernails looking like you tunneled out of prison), and maybe a cold sweet tea on standby. Pulling weeds? That’s free stress relief. Pruning? That’s just trimming away the nonsense, same as we should probably do with some of those noisy folks in our lives.
And oh, the beauty of it—watching something you planted from a scraggly seedling grow up tall and proud while the world argues about whatever today’s crisis is supposed to be. Plants don’t get caught up in all that. A tomato never once told me who I ought to vote for. A zinnia never asked me what side I’m on. They just keep blooming, keep feeding, keep reminding me that life can be a whole lot simpler than we make it.
Willy Nilly Tip of the Day: Therapy bills can run into the thousands, but a packet of seeds costs about a buck-fifty. Guess which one grows you flowers?
So the next time the world feels like it’s running off the rails, shut it off. Grab your trowel, head to your little patch of sanity, and let the garden do the talking. The weeds don’t gossip, the carrots don’t complain, and you just might find yourself breathing a little easier.
Out here in the dirt, it’s not about escaping reality—it’s about remembering the good parts of it. 🌱
